Who were the first users of socks?

The oldest pair of socks, which is now in Victoria and Albert museum of London, is a pair of knitted socks belong to somewhere between the third and fifth century AD that were discovered at the end of the nineteenth century by explorers that were exploring the ancient Egyptian tombs. According to these discoveries, Egyptian Christians were the first users of knitted socks. Designing the socks, they were divided into two sections so that they could be used for sandals. Also according to the documents of the museum, three layers of wool with a short needle were used in this ancient method to stitch stockings. It would start from the toes and knitted up to the shins. In the middle of knitting the heels would be made up by knitted circles. This innovation allowed the heels when wearing the socks, to not have the need to make new socks but replace them instead

When was the first sock knitting machine imported to Iran?

The first sock knitting machine was invented in 1589 in England. The interesting thing is that its creator was an English clergyman named William Lee. Four hundred and twenty three years have passed since the first sock knitting machine was produced and now we have different spinning machines and socks with different models being introduced. It is also interesting to know that according to the available resources, the first sock knitting factory in Iran was established in 1954. Before that, handmade knitted socks were common and Iranian housewives of the time would make wool socks for the rest of the family. In 1966, Italian and Chinese sock knitting machines were imported to Iran, and then in 1971 they were copied and were stopped from being imported. Computerized sock knitting machines entered Iran in 1985 which only produced women’s socks. However, from 1991 onwards, more complete computerized knitting machines entered Iran’s market that could produce any kind of socks such as women’s, men’s and children’s socks

Who were the first Iranian sock users?

The first time socks were used in Iran was in 1306 when Nasereddin Shah visited Bradford City in England and brought back socks as souvenirs to his wives and later on it became more common among lower classes of society. Since then, socks were considered expensive clothing and were only worn in important gatherings. Since it would become worn out after some time, they would cut the bottom part of the socks out and they would replace it with another fabric, but when the top part would start to get worn out and would become useless, they would cut it from the ankles and sew fabric to the ankles and it would become a type of stocking called “Rekabi”. Before the start up of the first socks knitting factory, mostly handmade socks were common among the people. These socks were mostly made from sheep and camel wool or in rare cases from fibers such as silk. Camel wool would be usually used in hot and dry places like the desert and sheep wool would be used in other places for socks
